In response to the ideas espoused in the article, namely that a person has a right to live and die in their home and risks are unavoidable whether one lives at home or in a nursing home, a commentator asked, “What is the solution?” ... According to the Center for Medicare Advocacy and Lu and Lu, ownership and sponsorship type have been shown to significantly impact the quality of care in nursing homes, with for-profits generally having lower staffing levels and poorer patient outcomes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Meyer, and KFF Health News say for-profit nursing homes now account for approximately 72% of the more than 15,000 U.S. nursing homes, and they provide varying levels of care to 1.3 million residents.

The plan includes layoffs of about 1% of the health system’s workforce, numbering 26 employees. This is estimated to save Garnett $4.6 million in salaries and benefits. “[Garnet] continues to be challenged with significant labor expenses, inflation on supplies and equipment, and low payor reimbursement rates,” the health system indicated in a statement. The restructuring is the result of financial headwinds, including decreased demand. Patient volumes are gradually increasing, but not yet to pre-pandemic levels, the company stated in an announcement.

The work for the Andy Yee Memorial Palliative Care Unit is underway at Mercy Medical Center. This new space on the 5th floor of the facility will help to enhance patient care. ... In the next phase comes the renovation and remodeling of eight patient rooms. This new unit will help Mercy Medical providers care for about 300 patients a year.

Kaleidoscope is designed to provide patients with interdisciplinary palliative care in the home setting. Their care model includes services from nurse practitioners, palliative care nurses, community health workers, spiritual care providers and volunteers. The nonprofit also provides palliative care in a clinic setting at its Center for Palliative Care. “Kaleidoscope is a community-based palliative care program where we’re seeing patients in the privacy of their own home,” CHC Medical Director Karissa Misner told local news. “We also still have palliative care in a clinic setting. Now we’re able to offer two different entities for people that still want to go out to a doctor’s appointment.”

Greer, PhD; 6/24A stepped-care model, with palliative care visits occurring only at key points in patients’ cancer trajectories and using a decrement in QOL to trigger more intensive palliative care exposure, resulted in fewer palliative care visits without diminishing the benefits for patients’ QOL. The goal is to ease the final days not only for the individual dying but for their loved ones at a most painful time. Dr. Aditi Sethi, a physician specializing in hospice and palliative care, founded the nonprofit Center for Conscious Living and Dying (CCLD) based in Swannanoa. Sethi’s work focuses on helping people come to terms with mortality and break the stigma of avoiding the hard conversations about it.

Big Bend, a nonprofit provider, in 2021 formed a new parent company called Seven Oaks Health. TMH has entered into an affiliation agreement with Seven Oaks Health, as the new organization works over the next five years to build a larger value-based network to provide transitional and palliative care, social determinants support, as well as care navigation and other services. Looking to the future, the organizations’ plans to engage in value-based care could manifest through participation in the Accountable Care Organization Realizing Equity, Access and Community Health (ACO REACH) model.

When examining new markets, Addus focuses on regions where they can quickly become the largest or second-largest provider by market share, according to CFO Brian Poff. ... Its insurance division covers more than 4 million members. The nonprofit health system reported a $31 million net loss in 2023, compared with a more than $1 billion loss the prior year. Operating losses for 2023 totaled $198 million.

Dr. Clinton’s specialty was palliative care, including the care of the caregiver. He was a superb clinician, a compassionate provider and a steadfast partner. He worked for Valley Intensivists for five years before his death. Since his passing, nearly $30,000 has been donated in his memory.
