Florida hospitals reopen post-Milton
10/11/24 at 03:00 AMFlorida hospitals reopen post-Milton Becker's Hospital Review; by Molly Gamble; 10/10/24, 5:00 pm EDT Florida hospitals' emergency preparedness largely proved effective throughout Hurricane Milton, leaving some in a position to resume normal operations Friday, Oct. 11. Such is the case for 1,041-bed Tampa General Hospital, the region's only level 1 trauma center. On its main campus, Tampa General healthcare providers and staff who are trained in emergency management remained on-site throughout the storm to care for patients. The hospital did not experience major power outages due to reinforcement from its Central Energy Plant, built in 2022 at 33 feet above sea level. TGH planned to resume normal operations on Friday, Oct. 11. HCA Florida Healthcare began resuming operations for several sites on Oct. 10, reopening three locations that had been temporarily closed in hurricane preparations. Before Milton made landfall at 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 9 as a Category 3 storm, 313 healthcare facilities in the state reported evacuations, including 17 hospitals. All hospitals that remained open before the hurricane remained operational the morning of Oct. 10, with the exception of HCA Florida Largo Hospital, which evacuated about 230 patients early Wednesday morning due to flooding in the facility's basement. While Florida hospital facilities withstood Hurricane Milton relatively well, the state's healthcare system is expected to face ongoing pressure. Flooding and storm damage are likely to disrupt outpatient and community-based services, such as pharmacies, which could lead to higher patient volumes in emergency departments.

09/28/24 at 03:00 AMBlumenauer proposes overhaul to Hospice Benefit: If enacted, the legislation would be the single most significant update to the hospice benefit and payment structure since its inception in 1982.U.S. Congressman Earl Blumenauer, Washington, DC; Press Release; 9/26/24Today, Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), a senior member of the Ways and Means Committee, introduced the Hospice Care Accountability, Reform and Enforcement Act (Hospice CARE Act) to modernize Medicare’s hospice benefit, which has remained largely unchanged since its inception in 1982. The proposal comes as egregious reportsof fraud and abuse within the benefit persist, despite action from Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The legislation is the product of years of collaboration between stakeholders, lawmakers, and industry leaders. It builds on Blumenauer’s decades-long commitment to ensure the federal government supports families at a time of great stress and vulnerability: the end of life.

Fraudulent hospices reportedly target homeless people, methadone patients to pad census
08/24/24 at 03:00 AMFraudulent hospices reportedly target homeless people, methadone patients to pad census Hospice News; by Jim Parker; 8/23/24 Fraudulent hospices in California reportedly have been targeting homeless people and methadone patients, promising them a steady supply of opioids in exchange for enrolling in hospice. Three hospice leaders came forward to Hospice News to report these practices. According to their reports, unscrupulous providers have canvassed both homeless encampments and methadone clinics seeking to sign up patients who are not terminally ill. In many cases, the sources said, these operators offer patients free access to board-and-care facilities and a daily supply of morphine. Another frequent practice among these hospices is to offer patients cash or other items in addition to drugs, they said. “This conduct raises serious fraud concerns on kickbacks or gifts to beneficiaries who do not appear to qualify for hospice,” Bill Dombi, president of the National Association for Home Care & Hospice (NAHC), told Hospice News. “More importantly, this conduct is predatory, taking advantage of individuals in addiction. Jail time is not enough punishment for the harm that such conduct creates.”Editor's Note: This is abhorrable. Click on the title's link to read more. While John Oliver's "Last Week Tonight" episode on 8/18/24 gained criticism from many hospice leaders, these fraudulent unethical behaviors (and others') lay the groundwork for such dire distrust from the public. These organizations' behaviors must be stopped. These persons and organizations must be held accountable.
