UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Witty steps down Modern Healthcare; by Shelly Banjo; 5/13/25 UnitedHealth Group Inc. unexpectedly replaced its chief executive and suspended earnings guidance, raising increasing questions over how the company once regarded as a safe bet by investors has got its cost predictions so wrong. The company brought back Chairman and former CEO Stephen Hemsley for the top role, saying Andrew Witty has resigned “for personal reasons.” The health insurer, whose top insurance executive was murdered in New York last December, also ripped up its 2025 outlook. The meltdown in its outlook blindsided investors yet again.

Ohio payer beats UnitedHealthcare in racketeering lawsuit, awarded $50M Becker's Payer Issues; by Jakob Emerson; 3/19/25 An Ohio jury awarded Medical Mutual of Ohio over $50 million in damages on March 12 after the payer prevailed in its lawsuit against FrontPath Health Coalition and HealthScope Benefits, a subsidiary of UnitedHealthcare. FrontPath offers employee benefits solutions, and HealthScope is a third-party administrator. .. The defendants were found to have committed federal wire fraud, telecommunications fraud, tampered with records, and obstructed justice by submitting false bid information. The jury found that the conspiracy resulted in significant damages to Medical Mutual and ultimately caused taxpayers to pay higher healthcare costs than necessary.

Humana posts $693M loss in Q4 Becker's Payer Issues; by Jakob Emerson; 2/11/25 Humana lost $693 million in the fourth quarter of 2024, according to the company's year-end earnings report published Feb. 11. The results reflect increased benefits expenses, particularly in Medicare Advantage and state-based contracts. Despite the challenges, the company projected earnings per share of $15.88 for 2025, with an adjusted EPS of approximately $16.25. Total revenues in the fourth quarter were $29.2 billion, up 10.4% year over year. In 2024, total revenues were $117.8 billion, up 10.7%. Humana posted a net loss of $693 million in the fourth quarter, compared to a $541 million net loss the year prior. In 2024, the company's net income totaled nearly $1.2 billion, down 52%.
