09/05/24 at 02:40 AMHospice ‘pausing’ Martin-Linsin Residence while expanding home-care model OrleansHub.com, Orleans County, NY; by Tom Rivers; 9/3/24 The Martin-Linsin Residence has temporarily closed or is on “pause” following a thorough analysis that showed “significant financial losses due to the increasing operational costs” at the residence, according to a statement this evening from Niagara Hospice, which is running Hospice of Orleans. The eight-unit residence opened in 2012 following a $2.3 million capital campaign. Martin-Linsin used to have a waiting list, but was down to one resident last week. No new residents had been admitted for about three weeks. The clinical staff also was laid off last week after the death of the remaining resident at Martin-Linsin, a Hospice employee said. Niagara Hospice, in its statement, said it is dedicated to caring for the local community, and hospice care “continues to be delivered throughout Orleans County without interruption.”

The youngster added to the fun by logging his trips on an online Lord of the Rings game - which enabled him to take a virtual 145-mile journey through writer J. R. R. On that day, $25,000 was raised and more donations continue to come in. Hospice care is a service for any person who has an illness or a decline in health. Nurse Manager at Bluegrass Hospice Care Center in Hazard, Donna Gibson, has been working in hospice care for 17 years. ... Bluegrass Care Navigators works to provide hospice care for all who need it, at no cost, said Associate Director of Philanthropy, Dawson Barnett. “Support on radio day throughout the year allows us to continue serving patients and their families regardless of their insurance status and ability to pay,” said Barnett. “We never have to turn anybody away from our care.”

The event serves as a traditional fundraiser while educating the community and sharing stories about the program. Bob Franko, CEO of VNA Hospice NWI, has high anticipation every year as this event inches closer. “This is something that we look forward to every year,” Franko said. “We have about 250 people in our Meals on Wheels program. Every $125 that we raise today will feed a senior for a month. Food scarcity has become more of an issue in our community for the seniors, so this event is really important for us.” Don Quijote has supported the mission for VNA Hospice’s Meals on Wheels program. The restaurant covers all of the event costs, allowing all of the funds raised to go directly to feeding seniors in need.Editor's Note: What a wonderful community partnership. But many hospices – one in five – are either cutting specialist palliative and end of life services in the last year or plan to do so. Fortunately, we are not one of those at the moment. ... NHS funding has failed to keep up with the increase in demand and expenditure. We are increasingly relying on people leaving gifts in wills, running marathons and donating clothes to deliver our core services. The model is breaking. ... At St. Christopher’s we receive 34% of our income from the NHS – for the remaining 66% we rely on the generosity of the community. Hospices should not have to rely on the generosity of the community to provide essential healthcare services. ... Abba's "Dancing Queen" blared over the mobile sound system's speakers. The run is a fundraiser for Mahaska Health Partnership's Hospice Serenity House. ... Participants in the event could chooses to register for either a 5k run or a 2k walk. Registration for either was $25. Donors who contribute $500 or more get their names included on the back of t-shirts made up for the event, said Amanda Doud, director of the Mahaska Foundation. There are 22 names. ... The size of donations varies. "We have a lot of families that donate $100, $200," Doud said. On the other end, Mahaska Rural Water donated $5,000 to the event, which was matched by CoBank, Doud said. Volunteers also took donations the day of the event — a first for them, Doud said. "We had a donor come forward, said all the funds raised the morning of the event, they will match," up to $20,000, Doud said. "We've never had a matching gift or anything like this before." How much money was raised isn't yet available, Doud said.

This remarkable project was undertaken as part of Polk’s Eagle Scout initiative, showcasing his dedication to service and his desire to make a positive impact on those in a time of need. Inspired by his brother’s Eagle Scout project in 2021 and his mother’s (Laura Adams) continued support as a community and fundraising volunteer for Hospice of Scotland County, when it came time for his own project, Polk reached out to Hospice of Scotland County volunteer coordinator Bunny Hasty for ideas.

The annual Ice Bucket promotion is a fun way to raise awareness and enhance support for those living with ALS. Hospice of the Valley’s Tucson team was excited to accept the chilly challenge. One such item was a new patient care mannequin. The current mannequin already had served its purpose well, but was in use for 30 years. Although HomeCare & Hospice applied for a grant to cover the cost of a new medical mannequin, they were not accepted. Thankfully, a community member aware of the need made an anonymous donation to cover the $2,500 cost.Notable mention: Melissa Sullivan, CEO of HomeCare & Hospice.
